The best fertilizer recipe for seedlings and plants

Organic fertilizer spelled out with wooden letter tiles on a light textured background, relevant to gardening and plant care tips.
Here’s an easy recipe to make a fertilizer concentrate that helps your plants grow big and strong! You can use it for seedlings or any plant. It’s like giving your plants a healthy smoothie.

What you’ll need

For 2 cups of water (about the size of a big drinking glass):
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of citric acid
This helps the plants “drink” all the good stuff better!
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) of iron sulfate
It keeps the leaves green and healthy.
  • 3 teaspoons (15 ml) of monopotassium phosphate
This makes strong roots and helps flowers grow.
  • 3 teaspoons (15 ml) of ammonium nitrate or urea
It’s like food for the leaves, helping plants grow tall and leafy.
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate)
It keeps leaves green and helps plants make energy.

Essential Ingredients for Homemade Seedling Fertilizer

  1. Pour 2 cups of water into a bowl.
  2. Add all the ingredients one by one and stir until everything is dissolved.
  3. Pour the mix into a bottle to store it. Don’t worry—it doesn’t matter if you keep it in the light or dark.

How to use It

  • Take 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of the mix and add it to 1 quart (1 L) of water. That’s 4 cups.
  • Use this to water your plants every time they need a drink!
  • Start using it 2 weeks after your plants have been transplanted. Growing seedlings indoors? Start 2 weeks after you move each one into its own pot.
  • Keep using it until they start growing their first fruits. 🌿
Important: Baby seedlings don’t need food yet. Wait until they grow their first true leaves.
Want good microbes too? Add a bacteria and Trichoderma product to the watering can, not to the bottle of mix. Use the amount on its label.
